Jamie Simon-Wainick entered last fall with the sole mission to care for her daughter as her daughter was going to be facing an orthopedic surgical procedure that would leave her unable to walk for several months. The plan was in place for Jamie to be by her daughter’s bedside this winter as she recovered, assisting with all of her day-to-day needs.

While preparing her daughter for surgery, Jamie then received a shocking diagnosis that she, herself, now had cancer. Jamie began a scramble to seek the proper path for her own cancer treatment while preparing for how she could still assist her daughter in recovery.

A month ago, while running tests for upcoming cancer treatment, Jamie sadly suffered several unexpected strokes. She spent a week in the ICU and was then transferred to the Kessler Rehabilitation Institute in West Orange, NJ where she spent the last few weeks, trying to regain her speech, fine motor skills, and mobility.

This sequence of events has put a mother, whose entire life was focused on giving and serving others, in a position of great need. Jamie’s income was an important part of the family’s financial balance which has now stopped. Her husband Michael, also a volunteer firefighter in Wayne, NJ must also continue to work to minimize the financial damage taking place. They are now in need of at-home care for both her daughter and Jamie as they try to recover. Their current financial pressures include at-home care, mounting medical bills, mortgage, food, and day-to-day bills of the household.

Anyone who knows Jamie knows that she is the last person to ever ask for help. Instead, she is always the one to be giving. That said, this situation at hand is one where the help of those like us is the only way they can get through this crisis. We ask that you please assist by sharing this story with as many people as possible and doing anything you can, even if it’s the smallest amount, to try and help Jamie and her family financially. Our wish is that our community show its solidarity in this moment in supporting a family that could in a blink be any one of us.
