My name is Shannon Richards, and I am here on behalf of my family to ask for you to bless my sister, Jamie Laird, with some financial assistance. Jamie is the most loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter anyone could ever ask for, and we are asking for your help so that the quality of her life can be improved.
In May 2025, my sister received some devastating news. She had been falling often, slurring her speech, and had shortness of breath. After many months of visiting doctors looking for answers, Jamie learned that these symptoms were a result of ALS.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells (motor neurons) in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and a loss of physical function. ALS ultimately impairs a person's ability to move, speak, swallow, and breathe, and there is currently no cure.
Although her diagnosis is a truly devastating reality my sister has to deal with, she fights each day to stay present, adapt to her illness, and to make the most of the precious time she does have left. With each day, her mobility, speech, and breathing become more affected.
If you know my sister, Jamie, you know that she loves with her whole heart and puts everyone else before herself. I know that Jamie and her husband, Roy, would rather be doing anything than asking for help. But with this diagnosis comes an overwhelming financial burden, especially because she is no longer able to work. These changes are not optional. They are what will allow her and Roy to stay in their home, help Jamie maintain some of her independence and dignity, and stay close to the people she loves.
Here is what your contribution will help with:
- Making her home ADA compliant with space for her wheelchair and medical equipment
- Raising and leveling her floors, making sure there are no stairs for her safety
- Covering ongoing medical expenses such as therapies, caregiving support, and acquiring a handicap-accessible van in the future
Your support means the world to my sister and her family. Your contribution will help Jamie and Roy focus on her care instead of the financial burden that ALS has placed on them. Thank you for reading, caring, praying, and being part of my sister's journey! Your kindness means the world to her.
