Hello, my name is Layne. I want to tell you about the incredible courage and generosity of my best friend, Jamie Booth.
After 23 years of working as a hairdresser, Jamie has never taken off more than 10 days in a row. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, Jamie, a single mother and owner of Melange Hair Studio in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta, GA, closed the doors to her salon on March 21st and has not worked since. Her sole occupation and source of income is spending time behind the chair in her salon, taking care of her clients and not only making them feel beautiful, but making sure they feel heard and cared for.
On Monday, April 20th, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced his executive order, stating that salons and other small businesses would reopen to the public on April 24th, despite there being no decline in infections of COVID-19 and subsequent deaths throughout the state.
Upon receiving word of this order, Jamie made the decision to remain closed for business, so that she could help protect the health and well-being of her clients. She will continue to go without a paycheck to do the right thing - even if that means not knowing how she will pay her mortgage and salon rent for the months of April and May.
Through the years, I've watched as Jamie initiated fundraisers at her salon to help others in need throughout our community. When someone is struggling or grieving, she is among the first to offer her love and any support that she can. Ask any of her clients, and they'll tell you the same. Jamie makes people feel seen. The people in her life know they matter. She is light and love, through and through.
I'm grateful to share these words on her behalf. I believe it's time for her to be on the receiving end of all that she does for others. And I'm incredibly proud of her for the sacrifice she's making to protect her clients, as well as herself and her son from the risk of contracting this virus that has taken the lives of so many.
