On Wednesday, March 18th, James was surfing at Big River Beach in Mendocino, about to catch a wave, when a great white shark jumped onto his board and attacked him, biting both of his legs. He was fortunate to be able to fight the shark off and make it to shore, where three off-duty lifeguards surfing nearby came to help him. All things considered, we're incredibly grateful James was able to respond so quickly and receive life-saving aid from those with him. While the full extent of his injuries is still unknown, he has major tissue and muscle damage to both of his legs and is unable to bear weight on them at this time.
James, a dad and local High School English Teacher in Mendocino, is married to Chloe, a hardworking Nurse and dedicated partner and mom to their almost 10-month-old son. The next few months will be challenging and costly for them, being out of work while James recovers from surgery and works through physical therapy to get back on his feet. The funds raised will help cover medical bills, household expenses, childcare, and food, as well as any long-term physical therapy needs later on in James' recovery. Anyone who knows James and Chloe would agree they are the most humble, generous, and selfless humans who deserve nothing but love and support during this unforeseen, difficult time. Surfing is an integral part of their lives, having met through the sport, with James teaching Chloe how to surf on their first date. The attack happening at Big River of all places hits even harder, as they got married above the beach where it took place. With a young baby at home, the weight of this comes in many ways, and being able to lift the financial burden and stress during James' recovery so they can focus on his health and their family would be so appreciated. Any support, whether through donations or sharing this fundraiser, is deeply appreciated.
