Support James Hyland's Stroke Recovery Journey

My name is Angie Hyland Wells and my sisters, Mandy and Ashley, and I are reaching out on behalf of my wonderful dad, James Hyland, and beautiful mom, Debbie Hyland, during this very difficult time for our family.

On August 21, my dad had a misdiagnosed minor stroke at the hospital. On August 22, he was cleared for surgery by his doctor to release some nerve pressure in his neck. During that procedure, he had a massive stroke and was in ICU. His physician in ICU confirmed with our family that he did have a confirmed stroke on the 21st and should have never been cleared for surgery.

That massive stroke left my dad paralyzed on his right side and non-verbal. He has learned to speak again and is in the process of trying to learn to walk and use his right arm.
He has been in acute and subacute rehab facilities since Sept 1st. While we have made some progress, we have also had some setbacks with emergency room visits and infections while in subacute care.
He is currently back in the hospital in Rock Hill and will be sent to another subacute facility to continue working toward getting some of his life back.
My dad is one of the best people you will ever meet and has never met a stranger. Everyone who has ever met James or Jim or BJ or Deacon Jim (he has many nicknames) has truly been touched by his kindness, faith, and humility.
If you live in Rock Hill or York County, you will know him from:
  • Being a member of the Rock Hill Oratory in the early 70s
  • Rock Hill Police Officer for 22 years
  • Charter Member of the York County Fraternal Order of Police
  • Ordained Deacon at St. Anne Catholic Church
  • Charter Member of the St. Anne Knights of Columbus
  • Volunteering at many non-profits
  • Being a D.A.R.E. Officer in the 1990s in Rock Hill Schools
  • Law Enforcement Chaplain for different agencies
  • Constable with the York County Sheriff’s Office
  • Worked with catholic charities with the diocese of Charleston
And the list goes on…

My sisters and I have discovered that Medicare will not pay for all of his hospital bills, rehabilitation, and medical expenses. We have also realized that he may need extra assistance when he is discharged and able to come home.

We are raising funds to help my mom cover these expenses:

- Ongoing and future medical bills
- Ongoing physical, occupational, and speech therapy once he comes home
- Any other expenses that will be necessary to help my mom become his caregiver in his recovery.

My dad is a humble man. This is why my sisters and I are asking you for your support, whether through a donation, sharing this fundraiser, or lifting him in your prayers, thoughts, visits,  cards and well wishes. We are truly blessed that God has kept him with us and allowed us to care for him. Asking for help is hard, but now we need some help to keep his care and recovery moving in the right direction.

We are very thankful for all the prayers and kindness that have been shown to our family. My mom is also very grateful for all of the help she has received from friends, family, and loved ones. We won the lottery when it came to James Hyland being our dad, husband, paw-paw, uncle, brother, godfather, deacon and friend.

If you wish to donate personally and not on this site, please let us know and we will get you in touch with our mom, Debbie. All contributions will be directly deposited in an account specifically for his care.

With Love, Hope, and Faith
