My name is JaKyra. I'm a Master's student from Selma, AL, currently attending the Creative Writing program at The University of North Alabama. I was recently accepted into the summer study abroad program in Cape Town, South Africa and am raising funds to attend this two-week program, as well as tuition for the course. This is my final semester at UNA and I am super excited to be given this opportunity! Between a grueling Master's program, a part-time job, and editing gigs, I will still need some assistance. My overall goal is $6000, which will cover the program ($3750), tuition ($1665), and other travel expenses.
I've spent years crafting narratives that explore culture, identity, family, and personal history—all of the things that shape us into who we are. Studying South African literature in Cape Town presents an invaluable opportunity to further expand my perspective. By immersing myself in a culture rich with storytelling traditions and historical depth, I believe that it could improve the quality of my work. In addition to enhancing my personal knowledge, this experience will potentially inform my future writing.
I love to view the world through many different lenses. One of my biggest motivations for studying abroad is to experience it firsthand. I want to see the world beyond what I know—little ole’ Selma, AL. While I’ve yet to trace my own ancestry, one of my goals for the year is to do so and become more acquainted with that culture and history. Studying in Cape Town will begin to fulfill the growing pull that I feel toward Africa, as well as familiarize myself with the environment and practices. My background in creative writing has trained me to analyze and appreciate narratives from different cultural lenses, while my passion for exploration drives me to seek out perspectives beyond my own. Studying abroad will allow me to fulfill those aspirations, as well as prepare to create literature that is more globally aware and deeply resonant.
I want to thank everyone in advance for any and all donations. It is greatly appreciated. I can't wait to share this journey and experience with you all!
In addition, I will gladly exchange editing and writing services for donations. Thank you!
