Support Jake Ruhl's Brain Surgery/Road to Recovery
Donation protected
On behalf of our 21-year old nephew Jake Ruhl, we are starting a “GoFundMe” page to help support his treatment, recovery, and specialized housing needed during treatment for a serious medical condition. At the beginning of his freshman year at San Diego State University in 2016, Jake went to the campus doctor because he was not feeling well and having headaches. The doctor suggested he go in for an MRI and follow up in a week. Two days later, Jake was told he had a brain tumor. Once his diagnosis was made, it was non-stop doctors appointments and never-ending tests. He was able to take his finals early and had brain surgery on December 19, 2016, the day after his last exam. His goal was to heal over winter break and return to school for the start of spring semester.
Unfortunately, the surgical team at Rady’s Children’s Hospital was unable to remove the entire tumor safely. Initially Jake lost some of his eye sight, had to go back into the hospital due to seizures and had to learn to walk again. Also due to his age, a decision was made to take a conservative approach after the first surgery and not treat him with radiation or chemotherapy.
Through all that and due to his determination, hard work, and the power of prayer, he met his recovery goal and started spring semester in January 2017 as planned. He is really an amazing young man! Since then, Jake has had quarterly MRI’s to monitor any change or growth of his tumor.
Because of all that he has gone through and continues to go through, Jake wanted to give back. For the last two years, Jake has been on the Executive Board of the SDSU Dance Marathon which is a charitable organization dedicated to raising money for Rady’s Children’s Hospital, where he continues to be treated. Under the Executive Board's leadership, the Dance Marathon has donated over $600,000 in the two years he has been involved. He has also worked with incoming kids and their families to provide support, ease their fears and instill confidence in their care and healing.
Recently, Jake and his family found out that his tumor has grown to a point of needing another surgery. He will complete his finals for this semester and just 2 ½ years after the first surgery he will be enduring surgery again on June 3rd. This time Jake will undergo radiation treatment for six weeks and will need chemotherapy treatment for a year. He is also a candidate for a first-round clinical trial which will require Jake and his family to relocate near the Moore’s Cancer Center for at least six weeks. Again, Jake's goal is to make it back for the start of his senior year and graduate on time.
Jake is gifted with a very strong will and an amazingly positive attitude despite all he has gone through and will be going through. He has never complained or asked for any help. He's committed to winning this fight so he can continue to give back and help others who share his unique experience. Jake really does believe he is blessed.
We are reaching out to ask for your support to help Jake and his family with the unexpected high medical expenses and special housing needs they will have during his treatment and healing in San Diego. Your support will be able to ease their minds so they can focus on Jake and his healing. Any amount will help and no amount is too small. Your love, support, and prayers are greatly appreciated and welcomed as they move forward through this next journey. God Bless you and THANK YOU! And please hug your kids today! Life can unexpectedly change in an instant!
