Support Jake the Drake's Recovery Journey
Donation protected
Hi! My name is Erica, and I'm a Keizer resident. I rescued the jumbo white Pekin duck (we named Jake the Drake) from Staats Lake about a month ago. At the time, Jake was in very bad shape, likely going to die! Here is his story.
*We sincerely hope you will consider donating to his journey to recovery!*
When Jake the Drake was still a baby in spring of 2024, someone dumped him at Staats Lake. He lived on the lake for awhile until he broke his leg and was in danger of dying! Another Keizer resident (who I connected with later on Facebook) helped him find a home to love him and rehab him. Finally, Jake was in good shape!
He was set free back at Staats Lake in February 2024. After a few days, Jake began limping again and stayed in one place for nearly a week. That’s when I came in! I have 5 domesticated ducks at home so when I saw Jake, I knew something was very wrong. He could barely walk. The poor guy hadn’t been eating, was malnourished, and wasn’t acting like a duck.
**I was able to get him to my vet (Creekside Clinic) where he was diagnosed with a life threatening foot infection, and prescribed topical and oral antibiotics. They weren’t sure if he’d make it. I administered his antibiotics twice daily for 2 weeks.
**I also had him tested for avian influenza (bird flu) by the Oregon Department of Agriculture; he tested positive for the low path strain! I had to quarantine him in a dog crate in my family room for about a month, otherwise my other ducks could get sick too.
Thankfully, Jake the Drake completed his treatment and responded really well to it! Jake’s also been retested for bird flu, and he is negative! He is doing so much better now!! He is acting like a very happy, healthy male duck.
**I am starting this Gofundme to help cover some of Jake’s vet bills, food, and puppy pads during quarantine. It would be such a blessing if you would consider donating to his journey to recovery. Anything would help!**
About Jake’s future:
I am also looking for a home for Jake. Based on his history of injury at Staats Lake, I believe it’s too rocky and steep for him to live a healthy life there. Unfortunately, I cannot keep him. I have a couple of people lined up to take him who have chickens. However, if anyone knows someone with ducks who would love to have our Jake, we would prefer that! Please reach out to me!
Thank you so much for reading!
