Help Jake Safely Stay in the Home He Loves
Hello — I’m Kim Paul, and my husband Jake and I have been together for 28 years, married for 23. Jake is the youngest of seven siblings—five of whom, including him, were diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. He outlived his four affected siblings. His mother passed when he was just 16; she carried the Huntington’s gene.
About Huntington’s Disease
Huntington’s is a rare, terminal inherited disorder that progressively breaks down nerve cells in the brain, causing loss of daily functioning. Jake struggles with memory, concentration, anxiety, depression, slurred speech, unsteady walking, and involuntary movements.
He was an incredibly dedicated employee for 38 years, but as symptoms worsened—difficulty climbing stairs, deliberate movements—he had to make the painful decision to stop working and we had to fight for Disability benefits. We drained our savings and lived on my income while medical bills piled up. We ultimately filed for bankruptcy.
As Jake’s wife and caregiver, I also live with systemic lupus erythematosus and urgently need a hip replacement due to osteoarthritis. I work full-time to support us and maintain our health insurance—but we face enormous monthly costs. One of Jake’s medications can cost up to $5,000/month without coverage.
Why We Need Your Support
Our multilevel home has 20 stairs at the entrance and another 8 to reach Jake’s bedroom and bathroom. Every day, he bravely tries to navigate them but often loses his balance—putting his dignity and safety at risk.
We desperately want to install a curved stairlift so Jake can safely access his home and maintain independence and self-respect.
*Straight stairlift costs typically range from $3,000 to $8,000
*Curved or split-level systems can cost up to $15,000 or more
Given our financial situation after bankruptcy, we simply cannot afford this critical modification or to move.
How Your Gift Helps
$3,000 would cover a basic straight stairlift
$8,000–$12,000 would allow for a model with power swivel seat and installation
$12,000+ could fund a custom system or a used/refurbished option suited to our layout
Every contribution—large or small—brings Jake closer to safely and comfortably navigating his own home.
Our Promise to You
We’re deeply grateful for your support. Updates on the installation process, Jake’s everyday life, and our progress will be shared here. Thank you for being part of this journey and helping us preserve his dignity and safety.
With heartfelt thanks,
Kim & Jake Paul
