My sweet 10-year-old grandson, Jahari, has faced two devastating events in just a week. In his own neighborhood, a teenager, known for robbing young kids in the area, held a gun to Jahari’s head and stole his personal scooter. His mother, a protective educator, hoped that after a week of recovery, a birthday party might give him a small sense of normalcy, so she allowed him to attend his friend’s party. The two friends decided to ride scooters in the neighborhood. Tragically, as they were in the bike lane, Jahari and his friend were hit by a reckless group of illegal ATV riders. Jahari was left in the street bleeding, and his friend suffered injuries as well.

Jahari now faces severe injuries—brain trauma, spinal injury, swelling, and the need for plastic surgery. His recovery will be long, requiring both physical and mental health therapy. Meanwhile, his mother, a dedicated educator, is 7 months pregnant with a high-risk pregnancy due to preeclampsia and was already on leave from work. She will soon have to care for a newborn baby, Jahari, and their older teenage son. Our family is overwhelmed, and insurance won’t cover the costs of everything Jahari will need. My daughter will need extended leave after the baby, and we need legal justice for Jahari because the ATV riders who caused this haven’t been found, and the cameras on the streets were not working properly.
