Jacob is 28 and was born with MPGN type 2. He was gifted a kidney from his amazing cousin in 2011. We were told this kidney may last 7 years. Well, it ended up lasting until last Tuesday by the grace of God, we got almost 14 years!

Jacob became severely anemic and ended up admitted to St Jospeh hospital. He was given 4 units of blood and emergency dialysis. He has been on the transplant list at Methodist in San Antonio for less than a year, and we planned for me to gift a kidney. It was determined I was not a match for Jacob, we needed a live donor to match him. I notified the transplant facility Thursday of Jacob’s health crisis and within minutes got a call that they had a backup offer for a deceased donor. The ‘donor’ was scheduled to come off life support Friday, one person was ahead of Jacob, hence the ‘back up’ offer. We were placed on standby….

Friday 5 pm we got the call that Jacob had become the primary recipient and he was in an ambulance headed to San Antonio by 7:30 pm that night. Saturday @ 1 pm they rolled him into surgery and he received his 4th kidney (fun fact, they do not remove the old ones, unless they run out of room).

Jacob will be out of work approximately 4-6 weeks due to follow-up appointments and immunocompromised status. He lives alone and has rent, a car payment, car insurance, and medications to pay for. We want to remove the burden of financial concern for him. Every penny will be used for Jacob’s bills and medical costs that will be left after his health insurance.

We feel very blessed that our family has all reached out asking what we need. We only want Jacob to not stress or have to worry about bills while he is trying to recover.
