Hello family and friends,
About six months ago, my partner Jacob began experiencing a strange numbness along his ribs and muscular atrophy in his abdomen. When it turned into nerve pain, he went to see his primary care physician and then a neurologist, both of whom thought it was most likely a bulged disc pressing on a nerve. They referred him for an MRI, but instead of finding a bulging disc, they discovered a large mass developing in his pleural space on the back of his right lung. After a night in the hospital, 4 CT scans, a partially collapsed lung, pneumonia, and a biopsy of the mass, Jacob has been diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive cancer called Ewing Sarcoma.
Ewing Sarcoma is primarily a cancer of the bones that affects children and young adults. While unlikely, it can manifest in adults and, in extremely rare cases, in the soft tissues of the body. Jacob's has developed in the soft tissue of his right pleural space/lung (the odds of this are around 1 in 100 million) . Fortunately, it seems that we have caught it before it has had time to metastasize and spread.
Jacob's treatment will be long and hellacious. It's anticipated that Jacob will be going through aggressive chemotherapy for the next year and a half. 4 initial rounds of chemo before thoracic/lung surgery to remove the tumor(s) and affected tissue, and then another year+ of chemo to prevent the cancer from returning and metastasizing; Ewing Sarcoma is stubborn and pervasive. The five different chemo drugs used in this treatment are aggressive and will come with very intense side effects that we will have to work hard to manage.
We've got an incredibly long, arduous, and expensive road ahead of us and any help at all is deeply appreciated. We personally understand how trying of a time this is financially and how difficult, if not impossible, it may be to donate anything. If you don't have the means to donate, your love and thoughts and prayers would be immensely appreciated. If you do have the means to donate, any amount at all would also be enormously appreciated and it will all go towards treatment and medical expenses.
Jacob is a tough cookie and will make it through this. We are so grateful for all of you and for your love and support ♥️
