On Monday, November 17th Jackie got the call with an official diagnosis of Metastatic Lung Adenocarcinoma - Stage 4 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.
A PET scan done on November 4th showed findings that could represent Lymphangitic Carcinomatosis and right supraclavicular lymph node metastases. A biopsy done on November 12th confirmed the lung cancer and that it has spread to the lymph nodes.
The next few weeks were full of worrying and waiting. The doctor informed Jackie that they were doing genetic DNA testing and scheduled an appointment to go over those results and put together a treatment plan.
On December 2nd, Jackie went with Jeff and Richelle (me) to the Oncologist. She was informed that she could start chemotherapy and immunotherapy and also that she qualified for a trial drug based on the results of the genetic testing. She needed to schedule an MRI to ensure the cancer had not spread to her brain - this would no longer qualify her for the trial drug. That appointment felt really positive. We left feeling good about the treatment plan and even though Jackie was still so scared, she was ready to fight. I keep repeating the first thing the doctor said to us that day, “remember, you are a person, not a statistic”. I plan to hold on to that through all of this. It may not be curable, but it is treatable and Jackie still has a lot of life to live.
Unfortunately, the MRI done on December 3rd showed two small lesions in her brain that showed metastasis. Since the cancer spread to her brain, she no longer qualified for the trial drug and would need to do a round of radiation.
Jackie's chemo port was placed on December 8th and was fitted for her radiation mask on December 10th.
