In July, my mother Jackie was in a car accident late at night after babysitting family members while their parents were at the hospital. Thankfully, Jackie was not physically injured, but her fender was torn off, the right headlight was smashed, and the AC unit was punctured on the bottom. Unfortunately, the damage is not covered under her insurance policy, and her inspection is expired and cannot be renewed until the car is fixed. She was quoted $4,000. To someone on a fixed income, coming up with that kind of extra money is nearly impossible.

Two years ago, Jackie underwent a hip replacement that went septic and resulted in five more subsequent surgeries that left her permanently disabled and unable to walk long distances. Having the car is essential to getting her to her many doctor's appointments, and it is the only way she is able to leave the isolation of her apartment and see her beloved family and friends.
