Raising money for his funeral expenses.
The cities of Nixon and Smiley are praying for the recovery of Smiley postmaster Israel Perez, 62, after he suffered third-degree burns to nearly three-quarters of his body from a house fire law enforcement alleges his own wife intentionally set.
Delia Ann Trigo, 64, of Nixon, was arrested Monday, July 14, and charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury to a family member and arson. She remains in the Gonzales County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond — $250,000 on each charge.
Nixon Police Lt. Travis Beck said first responders were dispatched in the early morning hours Monday to a structure fire at a residence at 711 E. 4th St. in Nixon. A male occupant of the house, identified later as Perez, sustained severe burns in the blaze and was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment. He remains there in critical condition as of Tuesday, July 15.
After the fire was extinguished, an investigation was conducted to determine the point of origin and cause of the incident, Beck said. Nixon police, working together with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety Rangers, gathered evidence which indicated the fire had been intentionally set and determined that Trigo was the individual responsible.
This case remains under active investigation.
