Hello friends and family!
As some of you know, my baby boy was born with a congenital defect causing a condition called Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). VUR causes urine to flow backward from the bladder into the ureters and in his case, the kidneys. As a result of VUR, Isaiah has the highest form of swelling (Grade 5 hydronephrosis) in his left kidney and grade 4 hydronephrosis in his right kidney. Our urologist recommends we continue with daily antibiotics and wait to see if he grows out of it, but many other parents of children with this condition, the doctors, and family, are concerned that they have never seen anyone with this severity grow out of it and highly recommend a second opinion. I have done so much research looking for any hopeful cases that have seen a turnaround..but I have yet to find any positive stories involving grade 5.
Since I am not sure if the right thing to do is actually wait to see if it gets better or worse..I feel like I owe my son at least a second opinion to make sure we are taking the right path so he doesn’t eventually lose function in this kidney.
So, I did some research on second opinions at Boston Childrens hospital and the second opinions do not take insurance. (The link to second opinions at Boston Childrens is also below). Second opinions cost anywhere between $850-$1,150 just to submit my request and have a remote consult. Fortunately, if we do end up having to go up there for further appointments, our insurance will cover the rest of this, but the $850-$1,150 is quite a bit more than we can afford right now. I have thought and prayed daily about what to do and I feel that it is the right decision to submit the second opinion request.
Thank you to all who share, donate, and continue to send positive thoughts and prayers our way!
