Isaac Light is the archetype for the All-American teenager; fifteen years old and a sophomore at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, VA. He is an honor student and an athlete on the school's track team. Isaac has a wonderful girlfriend and they have been thinking about their upcoming prom. Like many others, the two love to go running together during their free time. He is a son, a brother, a grandson, and a trusted friend. What sets him apart is his courage and strength as he persevered through a situation that would have pushed anyone to their breaking point.
It was Monday, but not just any Monday. The first Monday of Spring Break 2025 for Roanoke City Schools. There was plenty to think about and plenty yet to be accomplished. The week was young and the possibilities seemed endless. Why not start the day with a nice run? Simple enough and a good choice to set the pace for the week to come. At least that was how the morning started for Isaac Light. Little did he know his life would be forever impacted by a seemingly unpredictable and completely unforgiveable act of random violence.
At around 10 a.m. on Monday, March 24th, 2025, Isaac and his girlfriend Eliza were out for a jog on Brandon Avenue just like they had done on countless occasions before. It was broad daylight, the weather was slightly rainy but clearing, and the two decided running was worth it so they could be in peak condition for track season. Traffic was flowing steadily as it tended to do during this time of the morning. Then the unthinkable happens... They hear someone approaching from behind with slight speed. Another runner, perhaps? Acting with courtesy, the teens adjust their pattern to allow room for the unknown person to pass, and in that instant, everything would change forever.
15 year-old Isaac... Patrick Henry honor student, track athlete, friend, brother, son... the attack was sudden and completely unprovoked. Eliza heard a commotion and turned around to see Isaac on the ground, clutching his face, the unknown assailant in yellow running away in the opposite direction just as fast as he had arrived in the first place. And there was blood. Lots of blood. Survival instincts take over and the only thing they can think to do is get help from someone, anyone.
Fast forward. The man who attacked Isaac was apprehended by the police thanks to the efforts of the local news and residents who helped identify the assailant and bring him to justice. The pursuit of justice is proceeding and it looks like Isaac's attacker will face consequences for his actions. But is that the end of it?
The events that transpired on that Monday may be on the path to a legal conclusion, but the reality for Isaac has been permanently altered. Obviously he was injured due to the unfathomable violent choice of a deranged individual, however, Isaac and his family are now left with a long difficult path to recovery both physically and emotionally because of actions that were completely beyond his control. At the age of 15, Isaac should be looking forward to driving lessons, getting ready for prom, fun times out with his friends, and special moments with his girlfriend and family. The physical and emotional toll that violence extracts is immeasurable, and the healing process is often long and expensive.
Thankfully, the surgery that was completed to correct the damage to Isaac's face seems to have been a success in the best possible way. Isaac continues to recover and there will be more medical follow-ups and PTSD counseling as time goes on, that is, as long as the family can afford to pay for the necessary treatments. Currently, they are struggling to meet the staggering deductible for the insurance company to cover Isaac's surgical procedure and follow-up care. Medical care in this country is already ridiculously expensive even for those with insurance to put it mildly.
That being said, it is a travesty in the greatest possible sense of the word that Isaac Light and his family are now facing financial ruin simply to get the treatment he needs to recover from being a victim of a random act of unprovoked violence by a GROWN MAN against a CHILD. 15 years-old, and his life will be forever impacted by someone else's thoughtless actions. Is it fair that he and his family face insurmountable medical costs on top of the tragic horror that they have already had to endure?
Please take the time to consider helping the family by donating to this fund to assist with Isaac Light's growing medical bills. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you in advance for your consideration and generosity. No amount is too small or unappreciated, and anything above and beyond the medical costs that are accrued will be deposited into a savings account for Isaac that will be held in trust until his 18th birthday.
