Support Inmate Art Program at Marion Correctional
Donation protected
For those of you who draw, color, or doodle, you know the benefit it has on your mind, body, and soul! Creating art is a positive outlet for those who are able to have the materials and instruction to learn the techniques.
There is a newly found Art Program at Marion Correctional Institution in Ocala, Florida for inmates that is in need of art supplies. Unfortunately, there is no state funding available for such programs; it can only exist through donation of art supplies and monetary donations.
Marion Correctional Institute is one of the incentivized camps located in Florida. This means "inmates who meet a strict admission criteria based on their demonstrated positive behavior while incarcerated." While you may not agree that inmates who have broken the law should be allowed to do art or have recreation, please remember that the majority of these men will reenter society and become productive citizens. Art provides an outlet to express anger, frustration, and other feelings that help incarcerated people cope with their situation.
Currently, the art program students are creating greeting cards to be distributed to Veterans Hospitals and convalescent centers in Marion County.
The Go Fund Me funds will be used to purchase paint, paint brushes, canvases, art instructional DVDs, and other art supplies needed.
All instructors are volunteers or talented inmates.
