SUPPORT INDIGENOUS MUSICIANS: MAWKAS’ FIRST INTERNATIONAL TOUR
On February 21st, Mawkas will embark on their first voyage to the United States thanks to the invitation of Dr. Genny Ballard (Charles T. Hazelrigg Professor of Spanish at Centre College). This marks a significant milestone for the traditional Saraguro music ensemble and a special opportunity for students of all backgrounds to engage with Indigenous Kichwa culture through music.
Mawkas Saraguro: Traditional Andean Musicians
Mawkas (meaning ancient in the Kichwa language) is a family ensemble from the Andes Mountains, specifically the Saraguro region of Ecuador. Comprising talented family members, the group preserves and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Kichwa Saraguro people through music and dance. Their repertoire includes traditional Andean ritual songs as well as original compositions inspired by daily life, environment, collective memory, and spiritual practices in Saraguro.
Deeply rooted in Saraguro traditions, Mawkas integrates Andean religious customs, ceremonial elements, and community practices into its performances. They are committed educators who teach traditional dance and music to children and youth, ensuring cultural continuity and intergenerational knowledge transmission.
Members of Mawkas have achieved international recognition, performing in Japan, Russia, Spain, and across South America. Their global reach demonstrates their ability to connect audiences with the sounds, stories, and lived experiences of the Andes. During recent fieldwork and student engagement in Saraguro, we observed first-hand their excellence as musicians, teachers, and cultural ambassadors.

So far, Mawkas has secured 79% of the funds needed in order to implement the project. We need your help to raise the remaining funds in order to ensure the completion of the project.

Your contributions will go directly towards travel and accommodation expenses for five members of Mawkas to travel from Saraguro, Ecuador to Danville, Kentucky.
- Transportation to and from the airport in Ecuador ($500)
- Food and incidentals stipend during the travel for arrival and departure ($500)
- One meal with Latine & Indigenous student group and Bonner volunteers ($1,000)
