Support Indi: A Trailblazer Making Waves in Law and Surfing
Tax deductible
Hi, I’m Tom Hewitt MBE, founder and Global CEO of Surfers Not Street Children. I’m raising funds to support an extraordinary young woman, Indi, as she makes history and breaks barriers with an opportunity to study International Law in the UK.
Her story is one of transformation, courage and purpose — a young woman whose journey from the streets of Durban to a law degree in the UK, represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change lives.
Indi joined Surfers Not Street Children at age 9, one of the first girls in the pioneering Girls Surf Too programme. Over the years, she’s become more than a participant — she’s become a mentor, a role model, and a source of hope to girls facing the same challenges she once did.
She is the first Black female surfer from the programme to represent South Africa internationally and now she is has been accepted as the first young woman in the programme’s history to study law at university overseas.
Now, Indi is taking the next leap: studying International Law at Swansea University in the UK. Her vision is powerful and personal. Growing up in South Africa, she witnessed first-hand the impact of inequality and poverty.
Her first hand experience of the Fisher Street homeless shelters sparked something: a realisation that she didn’t just want to surf the waves of South Africa— she wanted to change the tide for people struggling onshore. Law became her way in.
“I always dreamed of studying overseas, especially in the UK. It’s not just about me — I want to come back and use what I’ve learned to improve the system here in South Africa. The credibility of an international degree can help open doors, not just for me, but for the change I want to create.”
This is where you come in.
With your support, we can help fund Indi’s studies, living costs, and access to new networks. She will thrive with the right foundation. Your investment is not just in one girl’s future — it’s in every girl who sees Indi and thinks “maybe I can do that too.”
All donations are through our US partner 501 (c) (3) The Sports Creative and go directly to Surfers Not Street Children's support for Indi.
