Support Independent Journalism
Would you spend a few bucks to support independent journalism?
I'm Gina Smith, the New York Times bestselling author of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak's biography, iWOZ: How I Invented the Personal Computer and Had Fun Doing It (WW Norton, 2006/2013), The Genomics Age (Amacom, 2005), a Barron's book of the year and other books.
But journalism's my main gig. You already know that if you are one of the some 750,000 returning readers we see at the independent tech, science and politics site I founded and run, aNewDomain.com
Our site, launched in 2011 as an independent, non ad-supported journalism site for journalists who wanted to cover things more deeply and with more edge than your typical mainstream media publisher or advertiser allows.
Our team of 75 plus award-winning editors, reporters, designers, video producers, cartoonists and webdevs on the aND team know all about mainstream media.
Big media is where we hail from. We don't want to go back. We love the freedom and depth an independent site without corporate support allows.
What you may not know, is that we've all been doing all these great news, reviews, infographics, videos, deep dives, investigations, cartoons and photo galleries mostly for free.
Why?
Because every journalist wants a place where they can put the great work that, increasingly, is so hard to place in the hit hungry, fast and short format that big media traditionally ones.
Now we're crying UNCLE.
We want to keep doing this. We also need to eat. We don't need you to float us entirely -- but we do need your help so we can keep creating five to 10 new postsa day of truly great journalism.
A little history
We didn't set up aNewDomain as a profit center when John C. Dvorak, Jerry Pournelle and I founded it back in 2011. As veterans of the BYTE.com launch the year before, our goal was just to provide all the great journalists we knew with a place to put their great content, with no advertisers or sponsors to police them or otherwise put them down.
And aNewDomain has been growing like crazy, audience-wise, ever since. We're now nearing 1M unique views a month, all organic.
The draw is our renowned, award-winning team. It includes Pulitzer-nominated cartoonist and essayist, Ted Rall, NYT bestselling illustrator Tim Downs (How Computers Work, 10th ed.) and a long list of well-known writers and editors, including Dr. Jerry Pournelle, Jason Dias, Mitch Ratcliffe, Cole Smithey, Tom Ewing, Larry Press and Terry Gardner.
Journalism is our passion -- we've all dedicated our careers to this. And keeping independent, non-ad supported journalism alive has never been more critical.
Please help support us with a well-considered buck or two. Email me anytime with questions, comments and story pitches. Let me know how we can better serve you.
On behalf of aND's edit team, thank you.
