Support incarcerated advocates and organizers!
We are members of several community organizations and coalitions that oppose jail expansion in Orange County and advocate for investment in mental health care, housing, and community-based support services instead of incarceration. Many members of our organizations are currently incarcerated. They contribute art, writing, and organizing efforts to this vision and lead our advocacy. They buy paper, envelopes, and stamps to mail art, letters, op-eds, and other work. They often have to rely on overpriced commissary items to survive the horrible conditions they experience inside. We want to ensure that they are compensated for their labor and supported by putting money on their books.
We are committed to compensating our inside members, but we need more funding so that we can continue to do so!
Organizers have written incredible articles and founded projects like Books Behind Bars, which provides books to incarcerated people. Members have contributed art to our recent report, "Cold, Rotting, and Moldy Meals: Food Oppression in Orange County Jails." The report details the rotting bologna sandwiches that have been served for every meal since the jail closed its kitchen at the start of the pandemic. Since then, incarcerated people have had to spend on average twice as much per day on commissary and supplement the inedible food with snacks. This funding will help our organizations' members to shoulder this financial burden.
The labor of incarcerated advocates should be seen, heard, and supported.
