This past month has truly been life-changing for Imani and our family. After a series of health challenges, he was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Unfortunately, these conditions went undetected and ultimately led to a diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)—a disease in which the heart’s main pumping chamber becomes enlarged and weakened, reducing its ability to pump blood effectively. DCM is a common cause of heart failure and can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and swelling. With proper treatment and monitoring, it can be managed, but it requires ongoing care and attention.
Leading up to his hospitalization, Imani was in the middle of several major life transitions—moving from active duty in the Army to working as a government contractor, completing his Veterans Affairs disability requirements, preparing for a move, and getting ready to begin a long-awaited opportunity overseas. Many of these plans have had to be paused due to this unexpected medical emergency. While he is still employed and has medical insurance, his policy only reimburses a percentage of his medical expenses. This means he must pay many costs—like appointments, medications, and equipment—upfront, and will only get partial reimbursement later. As a result, the financial strain continues to grow, especially with the uncertainty of future treatments and care.
Because of this, we have created a GoFundMe to help ease some of the burden. Any support you’re able to provide—whether through a donation or simply sharing the link—would mean so much to us. While this journey has been unexpected, we are hopeful and encouraged by the progress Imani has already made. With your continued support—whether through giving, sharing, or simply keeping him in your prayers—we know he won’t have to face this alone. Thank you for being part of his recovery story.
