Hello! I’m asking for help so I can continue my education and finish my bachelor’s degree. Here’s my story and why this means so much to me.

My name is Illia Yamchuk. I was born in Ukraine and I traveled the world working as a dancer and singer on cruise ships.

In 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine, it was no longer safe for me to return home. I came to the United States legally through the United for Ukraine program. I didn’t have family here, but close friends invited me to Des Moines, Iowa - a quiet, charming city with friendly people. Place where I could take a breath, clear my mind, and figure out what comes next for me.

One of my first steps after arriving was enrolling in English as a Second Language classes at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). I completed the advanced level and earned a certificate. Around the same time, I began working at Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI), where I still serve as a Community Resource Navigator (Caseworker). In this role, I assist Ukrainian refugees with resettlement and help them access community resources and support.

I also continued my education at DMACC, where I graduated in May 2025 with an Associate degree in Sociology. Shortly after, I transferred to the University of Northern Iowa, where I am now pursuing a Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree. My goal is to strengthen my ability to help, educate, and inspire others. I’m also passionate about raising awareness and advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, particularly for those in Ukraine, where being queer remains unsafe.

Unfortunately, due to federal restrictions, I am not eligible for federal education loans. While I’m deeply grateful for the financial support I’ve received from the University of Northern Iowa and Lutheran Services in Iowa, it’s still not enough to cover my tuition and fees.

To graduate with my bachelor’s degree, I need 120 credits. So far, I’ve completed 83 credits with a 3.74 GPA. I have 37 credits left, which will cost approximately $15,000.
