Hi everyone,
My name is Shannon and alongside my daughter Lauren we are reaching out during one of the hardest times our family has ever faced. My dad (Lauren’s papa) Tony is currently in the ICU fighting for his life. On saturday Oct 4, 2025 We rushed him to the hospital via ambulance because he kept falling and his face was droopy and just wasn't acting like the papa we all know and love.
Once they got him there and in a room they started IV fluids, blood work, head, chest and stomach CT scan. The CT scan came back with these results: Head was fine, no blood clots or any bleeding in the brain, chest came back with pneumonia and no blood clots, and the stomach came back with his right kidney not working. His blood pressure was 90/65. He was dehydrated and from the blood work his kidney function was very low and the doctor was afraid that he would go into renal failure if they didn't get the kidney function up. So they admitted him and pushed IV fluids.
On Sunday morning with my mom (Ida) by his side they waited for a doctor to come in on rounds and give them an update on everything and what the game plan would be. They are going to redo the CT scan of his chest and stomach and also do an MRI on his kidney. They will continue to push fluids. He doesn't have enough fluids in his body to have any output. The doctor said that there is a slight change in his kidney function. He kept blowing out his IV lines so they had to do an ultrasound guided IV so they could get a good placement to continue the IV fluids. They listened to his lungs and they were concerned about fluid in there because he was very muffled sounding. He is still very mumble, can't talk well, voice is shaky. The doctor thinks that he has the start of dementia because he keeps repeating himself. He is showing signs of kidney failures. He is too weak to walk and can't pick up his hands, arms or head. On Monday the kidney doctor and general practitioner came in and they are awaiting 1 more sample to come back that they have sent out to a lab in Colorado. They were pretty confident that he has legionnaires disease. Which is caused a bacteria that caused him to develop pneumonia. This disease attacks the kidney and can put them in kidney failure. His kidney function had a slight improvement but nothing that they are impressed with. They are pushing fluids. He has a little bit of output which is ok. Yes he is retaining fluids but once they get those results then they will do so with the next plan of action. More than likely he will have to start dialysis. He is very weak due to how sick he is.
They did get the results back from the lab in Colorado and it was positive for legionnaires disease so they are stating him on 5 super antibiotics vie IV.
On Tuesday the kidney doctor came in and said his kidney function is the same as yesterday. They are not changing the antibiotics at all since they seem to be ok for him.
On Wednesday the kidney doctor came in and his kidneys are still functioning very low. They will more than likely be starting dialysis tomorrow. He is on 2 liters of oxygen. His o2 stats are in the 90’s. So that night around 7:20pm the overnight nurse was doing rounds and found him unresponsive and staring at the ceiling. So they called a code and rushed him to ICU and put a cpap machine on him because of the breathing. His blood pressure was 70/50 at this time. They started him on a blood pressure medicine to raise the blood pressure up. They have him hooked up to an EKG machine to monitor the heart. They called my mom (Ida) right away and told my mom everything and because he was a DNR that she should get the family together and get to the hospital since no one really knew what was going on. So we all headed there thinking we were saying goodbye to this man who we love more than anything. It took a couple hours till they were able to get him stable and comfortable. By 10pm we all left and if anything else was concerning they would call my mom and we would all be notified.
On Thursday morning kidney doctor called my mom and said they were starting dialysis to see if they can get the kidney to work. Right now we are praying by the grace of God he can beat this and come home to us!
If you know my dad/papa you know he’s the maker of our family. The one who builds, fixes and creates beautiful things with his heart. He’s the glue that keeps us all together, the person everyone turns to for help, a laugh or just someone to shoot the shit with. Right now our mother is by his bedside helping him fight this. She is currently out of work due to being his sole caregiver. But you can imagine the time away from work is creating heavy financial burdens to her. She's not the type of person to ask for help. We as her family want to help to make sure she can be by his bedside. We’re asking for your support, whether through donation, share or prayer. To help ease the financial stress so we can focus on what matters the most. Is helping dad/papa recover and pray that he can come home to his family. Every bit helps our family. We are deeply grateful for your love and kindness, From the bottom of our hearts, Love Shannon, Lauren and our Family!
