Ian Woods is a UK veteran, former Battalion Chief with the UK Fire Service, and a U.S. police officer, and he is also an American citizen who has dedicated his life to serving and protecting others. Sadly, he has now suffered two hemorrhagic strokes—one a year ago, and another while recently on duty—along with a seizure. These medical emergencies have left him with serious, life-changing limitations that doctors expect will continue to worsen.
He has been diagnosed with Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy (CAA)—a progressive brain disease that has only recently begun to be recognized in the medical world. There is currently no cure and no treatment available, which makes his condition especially difficult for their family to face.
Because he split his career between the UK and the U.S., Ian does not have enough U.S. work credits to qualify for SSDI benefits. This means that, despite his decades of service in both countries, he is unable to access the safety net that many families rely on in times like this.
Ian has started to lose his independence and is unable to work or provide for their family as he once did. Ian is also unable to fly, which greatly limits his ability to readily see his children, grandchild, siblings, and mother, adding emotional strain on top of the physical and financial challenges.
The family's home is an estimated 1,200 sq. ft. camp-style house, and as Ian's condition progresses, they urgently need a small addition to create a larger bedroom and a separate sitting room. This space will allow for the placement of a hospital bed and provide adequate room for medical equipment use as needed, ensuring that he can receive care at home safely and with dignity.
The community, friends, and family are being called on at this time to provide much-needed support for Ian and his family. Financial contributions will go directly toward medical care, daily living expenses, and securing stability for their family. In addition, the family faces a number of practical needs where help from caring individuals, businesses, or organizations would make an enormous difference:
- Home safety and accessibility improvements
- Interior repair
Ian and his family continue to care for their animals, who bring healing and comfort to their family during this journey. Ian is able to do routine care and light gardening, but he can no longer take on the larger or unfinished projects needed to keep their home safe and suitable for the progression of what lies ahead.
More than anything, the goal is to help Ian maintain dignity, homestead living, and home-based care as his disease progresses. This is where he finds strength, comfort, and meaning—and with the right support, we can honor him and give back for his selfless years of service to his countries and communities. Proof of his military and emergency service career can be provided upon request.
Your support—whether through donations, labor, materials, or services—would ease a tremendous burden and allow their family to focus on health, healing, and time together.
Your kindness and generosity will not only provide relief but also honor the years of service and sacrifice Ian and his family have given to others. Thank you for your support for this family in need.
With gratitude,
Team Woods
