As many of you know, our beloved friend and colleague Iain Stanford learned in March that he has a very rare, aggressive form of cancer. Over the last several months Iain has received excellent care from an oncology team at Kaiser that prescribed a course of immunotherapy over several weeks. Given how rare Iain’s cancer is, there was always great uncertainty about how effective this treatment would be. Last month, Iain was so weakened by the immunotherapy that he had to be hospitalized for a week, and he has remained very weak since returning home. Further tests have recently made it clear that Iain’s disease has progressed significantly. In light of this progression, and with an emphasis on his quality of life, Iain has come to the decision to shift into a hospice mode of care.
He has let his parish, St. Peter’s in Redwood City, know that he will be taking his leave, and will be saying goodbye to them in upcoming weeks.
Many of you have been asking how you can help. Those of us who have been supporting Iain have organized a Go Fund Me to help support him financially as he enters hospice as medical leave alone will not allow him to cover his basic bills. We are deeply grateful for the practical and financial support already offered by our bishop to fill in many of these gaps. Our hope is to raise these additional funds to cover remaining basic expenses, and also to use for comfort, support, and care for Iain in these days. Thank you very much for any financial support you are able to contribute. He and all of us who are supporting him very much appreciate your support, not only financially but always, first and last, in your prayers. Love is everything.
Iain is so very dear to us. We struggle to wrap our hearts around what has happened and is unfolding in his life, and how quickly his illness is progressing. We cannot even begin to fathom our lives without him. We love him so much. In these difficult days, we surround him with love and prayer, and we invite you to join us from wherever you are. We will also keep you updated.
Thank you so much for your support.
