Hydra Dragons (FTC Team #23623)
*From Dreams to Robots: The Hydra Dragons' Epic Learning Journey*
This team of 15 students in grades 6–8 came together from three different Lake Orion, Michigan middle schools: Waldon, Oakview, and Scripps, giving rise to the three-headed Hydra Dragon name. At first, they were getting to know each other, figuring out how to work together, and learning the ropes of FTC. Through trial, error, and plenty of practice, they transformed into a team that truly trusted one another and showed up ready to work.
They met multiple times per week. Coding. Building. Outreaching. Fundraising. They’re mastering it all. Why? To build a robot that would conquer the toughest challenges.
“It’s been a huge learning journey,” says the team. “Designing a functioning robot sounds cool… until you try it.” From writing flawless code to crafting a robot that moves like a “dragon”, to fundraising and spreading the word, the Hydra Dragons nailed it all.
All their hard work led to an epic outcome: the Hydra Dragons crushed TWO qualifiers, and out of 72 teams, they fought their way to the top taking home the *State Championship* title in Grand Blanc, Michigan!
Their performance throughout the DECODE 2025 season has been impressive:
• #2 in Michigan
• #4 in the United States
• #10 in the world
• Winner of the Woodie Flowers Division
• First Place Inspire Award
• Set a world record
• Earned a spot to compete at Worlds
What’s next? They’ve got their ticket to WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS (Houston, April 29- May 1, 2026). The team is committed and motivated to knock doors, get new sponsors, and brainstorm other financial support.
Here is where we need your help.
We ask you to help us continue their learning journey and partner with us in the formation of these young students, that without doubt will be assets to our community.
Your support fuels their fire by helping fund:
• travel to Worlds.
• parts, tech, and tools for Hydra Glyph (the robot).
• transportation of the robot
Every dollar brings the Hydra Dragons closer to making robotics history and to boosting the kids’ confidence, they’re mastering skills for life!
