Help Hugh Beat Cancer—Again

If you've ever met Hugh, you know he's a fighter.

Hugh is a lymphoma survivor who underwent chemotherapy at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital in 2025. Thanks to his incredible spirit and the dedicated care of his mom and veterinary team, he beat the odds and remains in remission.

Now, Hugh is facing another battle.

During a recent recheck, veterinarians discovered a large mass on the right side of his liver. After advanced CT imaging and consultation with the UGA Oncology and Surgery teams, there was encouraging news: the mass appears to be solitary, has not spread to other organs, and is considered removable with surgery. The team is most suspicious that the mass is a hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common primary liver tumor in dogs. While any cancer diagnosis is frightening, this type of tumor often carries an excellent prognosis when confined to a single liver lobe and surgically removed. In uncomplicated cases, the average survival time is measured in years, meaning Hugh could potentially live out the rest of his happy life without this tumor affecting him again.

The estimated cost of surgery and hospitalization is $5,000–$6,000, creating a significant financial burden.

Hugh's mom, Libby, is a beloved part-time

professor in the University of Georgia Art Department. Over the past year, she has devoted herself to giving Hugh every chance to thrive, covering the costs of chemotherapy, ongoing oncology rechecks, advanced imaging, acupuncture, prescription diets, and all of the specialized care that has helped him reach this point.

Like so many pet owners, Libby has never hesitated to do what's best for Hugh. Now she could use a little help.

The most remarkable part? Hugh doesn't know he's sick. He still greets each day with a wagging tail, a happy heart, and the same joyful spirit that carried him through lymphoma. We'd love to keep it that way and give him the opportunity to enjoy many more healthy years with the people who love him.

Hugh has already overcome so many odds, and his veterinary team believes he is an excellent candidate for surgery that could give him many more healthy years by Libby's side.
