Update 6/21: We have a surgery date! August 27th in San Diego. Thank you so much anyone who has helped contribute and relieve some of the financial stress. We are eternally grateful to anyone willing to help, any amount at all. It all makes such a difference.
Update 6/19: We met with Hudson's ophthalmologist today and unfortunately his vision has not improved. She is no longer comfortable with pushing surgery to him being closer to one and wants him to have it by 6 months old (within the next 2 months). It is coming a lot sooner than we hoped or expected. Anything helps cover costs of travel, lodging, transportation once there, food, etc. I will post another update once we get our surgery date. thank everyone who has donated from the bottom of our hearts it makes a world of difference.
This is our 3 month old baby boy, Hudson Wayne. Hudson was born with a condition called Marcus Gunn Jaw Winking Syndrome, along with a condition called Congenital Ptosis. MGJWS is a very rare congenital condition where the nerves that control the jaw and eyelid are abnormally connected. Due to his MGJWS and miswiring of the nerves, he has severe ptosis (drooping of his eyelid) which causes his right eye to be almost fully shut. Due to the pressure of his eyelid on his eye, he has developed a significant astigmatism and due to his eyelid being unable to open past his pupil his vision will deteriorate in his affected eye and could cause other significant issues such as a severe lazy eye or his brain no longer using that eye at all causing complete vision loss. Without surgical intervention, he will never have normal function of that eye and his vision will not develop correctly. Neither of these can be improved or corrected without surgical intervention. Because Hudson is only 3 months old, even though he was diagnosed at only a month old with both conditions + an astigmatism, they are monitoring his vision before jumping straight to surgery due to the risk of anesthesia and him being so young still. His surgery will be anytime between this summer and him being a year old. The goal is to hold off as long as possible so he doesn't have to be put under anesthesia so young but also while making sure his vision doesn't decline more or he doesn't develop other issues due to his ptosis. We will find out when or if surgery will be this summer on June 19th at his next ophthalmology appointment and I will update then. The procedure Hudson needs is not offered in our state, and because of that we will be having to travel to either San Diego, California or Barcelona, Spain to have it. We are not sure yet if our state insurance will cover going across state lines as they normally try to fight that, and until it is scheduled we will not know for sure if they will or not. If we will have to pay out of pocket, we will then decide if we will have surgery in California or go ahead and travel to Spain where it may be cheaper to have there than it will be to have in a US hospital out of pocket. The leading surgeon in the world for Hudson's exact condition is in Barcelona, Spain and one of the best in the US is in San Diego, California. Either way, he will be in the best hands but if we can get insurance to cover it in California, it would obviously be the most ideal situation. For now, we are raising funds to help cover the cost of our flights, rental vehicle, food, and having to stay a minimum of a week for rechecks before we will be released to go back home whichever place we end up going to. These are the costs we are certain of that we will have to pay regardless of where we end up going. Once we find out if we will have to pay out of pocket for surgery, that will ultimately determine where we have the surgery. I will then update the goal amount for our fundraiser if insurance will not cover the surgery. For now, we are hoping that lodging, travel, and food will be all we pay for and insurance takes care of the rest. Any amount will help alleviate some of the costs, and above all else, please keep Hudson in your prayers and that his vision will have not gotten significantly worse in the last 2 months and that he may even be able to wait closer to being a year before his surgery. Thank you for reading this far and I will post updates on this page as we have them. The most priceless and invaluable thing you can offer us is your prayers.
