At Hovinais Day Care Centre and School in Arusha, Tanzania, mothers now have a life-changing opportunity: to return to education while their children also receive schooling—at little to no cost.
Founded by Director Flora, the centre was born out of deep research during her masters, on the impact of teenage pregnancy and forced marriage on girls’ futures in Arusha Tanzania.
Inspired to create change, Flora opened a safe haven where young mothers and their children could rebuild their lives through education, vocational training, and shelter.
Since 2013, Hovinais has provided:
- Accommodation for girls in vulnerable situations, such as leaving family due to forced marriages at young ages, offering safety and stability.
- Vocational training for young women who were forced to leave school due to early pregnancy or escaping forced child marriage.
- A Daycare and early education centre for children of these young mothers, was then established in 2022 to enable mothers to continue to attend classes.
Students in Tanzania have had to drop out of school due to teenage pregnancies, poverty and substance use. The Tanzanian government does not allow students who drop out to return to public schools. Hovinais gives them that second chance.
Challenges and How You Can Help:
All projects at Hovinais are either free or offered at a very minimal fee—ensuring no family is turned away due to poverty. However, this also means:
- The school relies entirely on local volunteers—there are no paid teachers.
- It takes significant time and effort to raise funds for food, learning materials, and basic resources.
Despite limited resources, the passion and commitment of Flora and her team are unwavering.
Project Goals and Immediate Needs
With your help, we aim to raise funds for the following priorities (as discussed with Director Flora):
- Wheelchair for Bright: A young child (8 year old) with a disability resulting in mobility challenges and currently has to be carried by her sister every day to and from school.
- Modern Kitchen: The cooking classes currently rely on outdoor firewood. A modern kitchen will help train students for hospitality jobs.
- Expansion of Hostel Facilities: To support more girls fleeing forced marriage or living in poverty.
- Expansion of Daycare Services: To accommodate more children and support more mothers.
- School Bus: To reach families outside the immediate area who currently have no access to such programs.
- Computers: To improve digital literacy and job readiness.
- TV for the Daycare: For indoor entertainment during rainy weather.
- Educational Furniture & Supplies: Desks, chairs, and learning materials—there aren’t enough for the growing number of students and current students are utilising benches, cupboards and the floor as seats.
- Outdoor Play Area: A safe and fun environment for younger children.
We, Talula and Tara, spent some time at Hovinais and experienced daily life at the centre—joining vocational cooking classes, preparing meals, assisted teachers in class activities, playing games with the children, and visiting hostels housing young girls who escaped early marriage.
This visit showed us the transformational impact this centre has—not just for individuals, but for entire families and communities.
