ALS is a cruel and devastating disease. It slowly takes away the ability to move, speak, and eventually breathe while the mind remains fully aware. Watching someone you love go through this and seeing how it changes their day to day life is heartbreaking, especially being that there is no cure so all you can do is watch this happen to them and find any another way to make it a little less heavy for them. My mom has been courageously battling ALS since 2021. Despite everything this disease has taken from her physically, she continues to face each day with incredible strength, bravery, and positivity. Anyone who knows my mom knows how special she is. She has always been someone who loves life and loves her family deeply. She loved traveling and going on road trips, always ready for the next adventure. She was always a very affectionate person to her friends and loved ones, a big hugger, ALS has taken that from her. Her greatest joy has been her grandchildren, she adores them and would spend every moment with them if she could. She has always been incredibly supportive and loving to everyone close to her. The kind of person who shows up when people need her most. My mom has also always been very independent, a true “do it yourself” type of person. Not being able to do the things she once did on her own has been one of the hardest parts of this disease for her.

Living with ALS is not only emotionally devastating but it is also financially overwhelming. While insurance helps with some medical expenses, many critical needs are unfortunately not covered. Families affected by ALS often face significant out of pocket costs like in home caregiver support, wheelchairs and mobility equipment, home accessibility modifications, medical supplies and assistive technology, vitamins, supplements, therapies, and transportation to frequent medical appointments. As ALS progresses, the level of care needed only continues to increase. Our goal with this fundraiser is to help relieve some of the financial burden for her so we can focus on what truly matters: making sure my mom receives the care, comfort, and dignity she deserves. Her most urgent needs are to pay in home care costs that her insurance requires to be paid out of pocket for months before they will start to cover.
