Support Home Care for Environmental Justice and Labor Leader Naeema Muhammad

Please donate what you can to help our sister and comrade Naeema Muhammad, who, because of increasing health problems, requires home-care around the clock. She has worked tirelessly her entire life in the service of community and justice, and now she needs our help. Costs for home care have exhausted her savings, so we are asking our community to ensure Naeema can continue to live in her own home and receive the care she needs. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to Naeema Muhammad to pay for home-care, utilities, groceries, and medication.

About Naeema Muhammad:

Naeema Muhammad is the Senior Advisor to North Carolina Environmental Justice Network (NCEJN), has worked as their Managing Co-Director since 2013, and served as their Community Organizer since 2001, leading state-wide efforts and supporting grassroots efforts for environmental and social justice. She is also a founding member of Black Workers for Justice in N.C., a community-based organization founded in 1981 that addresses workers’ rights issues.

Naeema has worked on two National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences-funded grants: The Community Health and Environmental Reawakening project, where she served as the Community Organizer and worked with communities adjacent to industrial hog operations; and the Community Health Effects of Industrial Hog Operations project, where she worked as the Community Organizer, Environmental Justice Educator, and Interviewer, and assisted her collaborators in qualitative data analysis. She has co-authored many publications with Dr. Steve Wing of the UNC-CH School of Public Health regarding community-based participatory research, most recently published in the New Solutions Health Journal.

Naeema’s work on behalf of community over the years has directly resulted in better conditions and pay for workers, more equitable environmental policies, stricter rules around CAFOs (Confined Animal Feeding Operations - AKA factory farms) and their disposal of animal materials and waste, and fewer CAFOs being allowed to set up operations in North Carolina. She is a beloved organizer and champion of the people, and we celebrate her dedication to making our world better and more just.
