Holly Hopkins is a well known face in the community of Key West. She is often seen volunteering at countless events, fundraisers, churches and schools.
About 6 weeks ago, Holly started having trouble with her legs. She chalked it up to increased activity and thought perhaps due to her Lupus, it was taking a harder toll on her and she continued with steroid shots and supplements. The pain continued to worsen and she ended up losing all strength in her legs and feeling in her feet.
A new MRI showed a cyst on her spinal cord and she was air lifted out to Miami Mt. Sanai for emergency back surgery.
Unfortunately, due to her condition, doctors felt she was not strong enough for such a risky surgery and opted to drain the cyst instead. This did not relieve her issues and she will require the surgery.
Since she is not yet strong enough for the surgery, she is being sent home to be monitored by a home nurse and will have to take trips bi-weekly to Miami to monitor the condition.
Once she is strong enough, she will undergo an extremely risky procedure that could leave her paralyzed. To say she is overwhelmed is an understatement.
Her physical therapy (required to get strong enough for surgery) is out-of-pocket and she is worried as to how she will pay for this and her other bills all while caring for her 11 year old son. She is a single mom, an amazing friend and mentor. She is the first to volunteer her time, lend a helping hand or donate to a cause.
Anything helps! If you are not able to send a monetary donation, sending meals, stopping by to check on her and helping out with Blayne would be so helpful.
I know Holly is so appreciative of all of her friends, family and island community support!
