On April 6, 2021, 4 year old Hayes Hollenbeck was admitted to Sanford Hospital in Bismarck for observation and testing for bloody stool and severe stomach pain.

On April 7, testing confirmed he had contracted E.Coli. and remained hospitalized to manage his symptoms.

However, on April 9, Hayes was airlifted to Sioux Falls, SD. when his CT scan came back showing pneumonia (which has now been ruled out) and appendicitis (his appendix is inflamed, but it doesn't appear to be the issue), additionally the scan showed a large amount of colitis due to the E.Coli. According to specialists he had a 10-15% chance of developing HUS,  a severe form of E.Coli. Hayes' urine output was not where it should be and he was given medicine to help his kidneys start functioning properly.

We learned today, April 11, that Hayes did develop HUS. He is receiving IV fluids to flush his kidneys, and morphine to keep him comfortable. It is likely he will need a blood transfusion later tonight. Over the course of today and tomorrow, it will determine if he needs dialysis. If dialysis is needed it could be an additional 3 weeks in the hospital. Clay, Calli and Calli’s dad are in Sioux Falls with Hayes. Family and friends are helping care for Colt and Nellie back home while also tending to the ranch, in the middle of calving.
