Support Hoku's Family: Recovering from Fire Devastation
Donation protected
Our dear friend Hoku’s family and their pets lost their beautiful family home and all their belongings in the devastating Eaton Canyon Fire in Altadena on January 8th, leaving with only the clothes on their backs.
This GoFundMe will help them get back on their feet with immediate needs and essentials while they navigate their next steps to restore their lives. Longtime residents of Altadena for 27 years, Liz, Roque, Hoku, and her special needs brother Matthew, for them this wasn’t just their home, it was their sanctuary. It was the gathering place for joy, dance, arts and crafts, creativity, and the yummiest food all made with love. For their family but also for all who visited. It was a place of gentle magic. Liz was a Montessori school teacher prior to having Matthew, then became a full-time stay-at-home mom who is also a fierce advocate for not just her kids but the special needs community. Not to mention heavily involved in the Polynesian community as well. She has taught hundreds of students even out of the backyard and living room of her very own home. She’s performed across many different community events throughout the years, volunteering at senior citizen homes, schools, farmers markets—you name it. Roque, a dedicated family man who rarely took a day off, worked double shifts to provide for his family and put this amazing roof over his family's head. He still found time to love on his family and walk the back hills of Altadena, creating everlasting memories. Reever Way had a way of turning your neighbors into family. Just before everything got even more dangerous, Roque, Hoku’s father, and a few other neighbors noticed a tree had fallen and was blocking 10 homes on their cul-de-sac! Roque, his wife Liz, and neighbors started to alert all their other neighbors, and everyone joined forces to chainsaw through a fallen tree, making just enough room for their neighbors to escape by car. This is just one testimony to Reever Way's heart and love that the neighborhood shares.
No amount is too small, anything helps. We love and appreciate you all.
