Hi, I’m Melissa! Some of you may know me as Lizzy. Last May I took in a litter of 5 feral male kittens from a colony located near my best friend’s house. In the true nature of foster work, I foster failed and kept 2 of the 5, Miso and Hoagie.
Hoagie is the sweetest, most innocent, little baby kitty you could ever meet. He still suckles on his favorite plushie banana duck and he headbutts you with his love. That’s why his full name is Hoagie Luvins.
Wednesday morning Hoagie threw up and he continued to throw up well into Wednesday evening. He had a vet visit Thursday morning where he got x-rays, subq fluids, and anti-nausea meds. Despite the medications, he still wouldn’t eat anything and was being lethargic. So, I took him back to the vet Friday (today) and this time he had a fever but his x-rays still looked clear. So, he got more fluids, an antibiotic and pain meds.
A couple hours after we got back home, Hoagie threw up again. His vet had told me to take him to an emergency vet if this happened, in case he needed hospitalization. So, we took Hoagie 45 minutes south to Louisville where the emergency vet did more x-rays and blood work and also did an ultrasound.
This time the x-rays showed a very fluid filled stomach that was largely distended and a fluid filled area of the intestines. The vet did an ultrasound and found a fluid filled area of the intestines that was churning liquid and an area right afterward that looked completely normal. All diagnostics point toward an obstruction and with Hoagie barely being over 1 year old, exploratory surgery was needed.
Luckily, Hoagie made it through surgery with no complications and no damage to his intestines. They were able to remove the foreign body, a single hair tie. He will be kept overnight and hopefully will show interest in food and water so we can come home tomorrow.
The emergency vet required a $4,000 deposit for the surgery and hospitalization and quoted a cost between $4,000 and $10,000. Since the surgery went well, it is likely to be on the end closer to $4,000.
If you are able, please donate to Hoagie’s medical care. If you are unable to donate, please pray for Hoagie and please share this fund raiser. You are also able to contact his vet directly to pay toward his care. He is at Metropolitan Veterinary in Louisville KY [phone redacted]. Anything you can do will be helpful. Thank you, so much!
