From Survival to Hope

Mint was just a 15 year old girl when she gave birth to her son Kookkung; at that age it was never going to be easy and after two years of being in an abusive relationship with her sons father, Mint made the decision to leave, to find a way to survive and give her son a better future.

Leaving Kookkung with her grandmother, she moved to Bangkok alone. Sadly, with little to no education or skills, the only way Mint could survive was to become a part of the ever-growing sex industry. It was never her dream, but it was the only path available, so she hardened her heart to the daily degradation and ensured that every baht she earned, she sent home for the care of her son.

When Kookkung was eight Mint brought him to Bangkok to live with her. It was now survival not just for one, but for them both. She had become involved with a Christian organisation and was soon leading outreach in red-light districts, mentoring women in safe houses and teaching the Bible. Life was still tough; Kookkung watched as his mum shared food when they barely had enough, he took note when she would feed him first when there was only one meal; he watched her pray, fight, work, and hope; soon their lives began to change.

When Kookkung was 9, he was baptised through NightLight, the ministry Mint worked for. His faith in the unknown began to rise as he experienced miracles; from one meal to three; from a delivery bicycle to a motorbike.

“You don’t have to believe because I do,” Mint once told him, but Kookkung said, “I believe because I’ve seen how God has provided.”

Kookkung has become a kind, quiet fiercely determined young man who understands the value of having something. Living a life in abject poverty taught him to save baht whenever he could; he got employment working for Food Panda and Bolt, carrying heavy deliveries across highways, picking up customers, all while finishing school and supporting home.

Kookkung wants to change what he saw, what he still experiences, and believes that if he works hard anything is achievable. His dream is to go to university, to arm himself with education, so that he can be a man to change the trajectory of the many people he sees daily. Kookkung wants an education not just for himself but to help others.
