Support HEVIA-Uganda in raising $2,500 to support young girls to stay healthy, go to school, and participate in their community activities.
HEVIA-Uganda deeply understands these needs and has found an organization (Health Vision Agency) to support health talks about menstrual health and hygiene in schools. Unfortunately, there is still a large need to purchase reusable sanitary pads. It is critical to combine women’s health awareness with products for young women and girls. HEVIA is working to support 4 schools in the area with 800 emergency menstrual kits. Each kit will contain 4 pieces of sanitary pads and would cost approximately 10,000 UGX ($2.75).
Background
On Friday 28th February 2025, students were playing during break time at school, and one girl experienced her first menstruation. She hastily approached a teacher for permission to go to the hospital. The teacher identified that the girl was having her first menstruation and supported her by sending for a packet of sanitary pads from a shop. The girl had been experiencing pain in the previous days and felt she could not wait for someone to return from the shop. She sneaked out of school and came to the community clinic seeking treatment. The nurses identified the case immediately, and they attended to the girl, but she objected to wearing a sanitary pad. Her mother was called, and together with the nurses managed to help her understand what was going on and why she should use sanitary pads.
It is essential that we support young adolescents with menstrual kits and sanitary pads in rural Uganda so they can continue to go to school and participate in their community activities.
