My name is Herman Chu. I'm a husband, a father to my beautiful young son, and for the past two and a half years, I've worked as a Claims Adjuster at HDI in Australia. Like many of you, I've built my life around family, work, and community – never imagining I'd be fighting for my life at 42 years old.

What Happened

On September 24 2024, everything changed in an instant. I collapsed from a ruptured liver tumour and was rushed into emergency surgery. Surgeons removed three-quarters of my liver to save my life. We were hopeful – until March 2025, when scans revealed the devastating truth: the cancer had returned aggressively and spread to my pelvis. I now have stage 4 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

We've Exhausted Every Option in Australia

Since my diagnosis, I've endured multiple rounds of immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies. Despite fighting with everything I have, the cancer continues to progress. My oncologist recently delivered the hardest news: there are no further treatment options available in Australia.

A Glimmer of Hope in Japan

Refusing to give up, my family and I have already invested AU$150,000 of our own savings for treatment in Japan. Now, we've been offered access to an advanced immune cell therapy (similar to CAR-T cell therapy) that's not yet available in Australia for liver cancer patients.

This isn't experimental hope – it's proven hope. One stage 4 patient recently achieved complete remission through this treatment. It could give me the chance to watch my son grow up, to be there for his milestones and his life.
