For 11 incredible years, my girlfriend and I have shared a love that has shaped my world in the most profound ways. Over the past 7 years, I’ve had the honor and privilege of caring for her as she battles a devastating and rare brain infection. This illness has stolen so much from her—epileptic seizures, relentless migraines, memory loss, and emotional stress are now part of her daily life.

Before this nightmare began, she was a vibrant and independent woman—a controller at NASA who was passionate about her work. She was the kind of person who lived life to the fullest. She loved going for runs, cherished moments with friends, and had a way of brightening the lives of everyone she encountered. Her kindness was boundless, and her spirit was unstoppable.

Watching this vibrant, loving woman become so ill has shattered my heart. As the brain infection has progressed and with each new set of challenges, I have been the sole caretaker, while still working 7 days a week—often 16-hour shifts—to support her. But now, her condition has changed again. Dialysis treatments have become necessary, and her liver, lungs, and heart are failing. This woman who loved to run now struggles to walk due to lung and heart issues.

It’s with a heavy heart that I now reach out for help. She needs in-home nursing care, something that I cannot manage alone. I never imagined I would need to ask for support, but I am desperate to give her the care she deserves—the care that could mean the difference to our family.
