Our beloved Helix has suffered a devastating facial injury in an accident that nearly cost her vision and threatens her livelihood as a photojournalist and creative.

On her way home from a creative summit that energized her, fueling artistic and professional hope, Helix fainted and fell face-first onto concrete. The impact shattered multiple bones in her face, including the delicate orbital floor that held her right eye in place. Without support, her eye began to drop into her sinus cavity along with bone shards, threatening permanent vision loss.

Once her medical team realized the extent and urgency of the damage, surgeons were able to insert a camera and endoscopically reconstruct the orbital floor with titanium and polymer implants, and then properly re-place the eyeball. It was complex, high-stakes surgery, particularly for someone like Helix who depends on her vision not only to connect and interface with the world but also for a living.

Helix isn’t one to stand down. She’s always first on the scene, both on the job and while photographing the social unrest that defines our era. In fact, a pre-existing concussion from military flash-bangs used by law enforcement to clear protest rallies was a contributing factor to the loss of consciousness that caused the crushing damage to her face.

It’s time for Helix to know that we are here for her. She is uninsured and unable to work. For perhaps the very first time in her life, vulnerable. As a freelance creative, Helix has no paid leave or safety net. But, in dark times, one looks for the helpers.
