Hi friends & family,

As many of you know, Hela came to the United States from Papua New Guinea in 2019 on a student visa to study Business Leadership. During that time, we met, fell in love, and built a life together. After graduating in December 2024, Hela could have returned home, but instead chose to stay here with me. We were married in February 2025.

On July 1st, our world was turned upside down when Hela was unexpectedly picked up by ICE on his way to his job. The administration filed a notice to appear, claiming that Hela had overstayed his F1 Student Visa since his legal status had not yet been adjusted after our marriage. This was devastating—not only emotionally, but financially.

Hela has no criminal background. He is a man of faith, hardworking, and deeply committed to our family and community. We’ve been told repeatedly that, under different leadership, he may never have been detained in the first place. Still, here we are, navigating this difficult reality.

Thanks to the support of our families and the tireless work of our immigration lawyer, Bill Niffen, Hela was released on bond on August 5th and is thankfully back home with me. His employer generously held his job, and he has been able to return to work. But the financial strain remains heavy. Between bond, legal fees, court costs, filing fees, and daily expenses, we have felt the weight of suddenly going from a two-income household to just one.

This has been one of the most traumatic and humbling experiences of our lives. While our families have carried us through so much already, we don’t want to continue leaning on them. Immigration cases are long, confusing, and costly—our lawyer has prepared us to expect this process to take at least 18 months and cost over $15,000.
