Support HBCU Students Covering Election 2024

Good morning, Friends!

I am Dr. Stacey Patton, an award-winning journalist and professor. This is an exciting opportunity to support 75 HBCU journalism students and 12 film students as they cover the 2024 Election Day. These incredible students will be on the ground reporting across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, covering not just the presidential race but also local elections that impact communities directly. This is hands-on, multimedia reporting at its best—and they need your help to make it happen!

The film students will be producing a documentary capturing this moment in time—a time capsule of democracy in action through the eyes of the next generation of storytellers. This effort is more than just an academic exercise; it’s a chance for students to write the first draft of history and shape their own narratives in a media landscape often dominated by corporate outlets. Their coverage will primarily center Black and other marginalized communities, ensuring these essential voices are not overlooked during this pivotal moment.

But to do this, they need your support. Here’s what we’re raising funds for:

Transportation: Getting students to polling places and ride-along stories with voters

Meals: Keeping the team fed as they work around the clock

Live Streaming Technical Support: Ensuring smooth broadcasts throughout the day

Digital Infrastructure: Access to software and tools for reporting, editing, and publication

Production Costs: Equipment and resources for the documentary

Emergency Supplies: Just in case unexpected costs arise over the three days

This Election Day coverage will span three days, from early morning to the following night, and these students are ready to hit the ground running. But we need your help to make sure they can focus on telling powerful, accurate stories without worrying about the costs.
