Happy Night is a thesis short film by Abisola Mohammed, a 3rd year MFA film student at Ohio University.
Happy Night tells the story of three immigrant women struggling to survive under the thumb of Grandy, a charmingly cruel boss who runs a corrupt nursing home. Tired of being exploited, the women band together and plot to steal enough money from Grandy to help their respective families return to their home countries.
As a female filmmaker, Abisola wants to celebrate the magic that happens when women form chosen families and imagine liberation in all its messy, vibrant, and unexpected glory. We live in a time when immigrants are being scrutinized and threatened. Yet, immigrants often invisible, work tirelessly to keep communities alive. As a filmmaker, I chose to tell this story because I want to deviate from immigrant narratives steeped only in trauma and silence. These women aren’t waiting to be saved. They are messy, clever, chaotic, and resilient, a reflection of so many immigrants I’ve met on this journey. They deserve joy, agency, and complexity.”
Happy Night is an ensemble-driven dark comedy that blends chaos, humor, and heart. Visually and creatively, it draws inspiration from films like Snatch, Birds of Prey, and Love Lies Bleeding, combining stylized cinematography with dynamic, character-driven storytelling.
We’re now entering the production phase in mid-December, and we are raising $5,000 to cover equipment, locations, cast, crew, and welfare costs. Every donation, either financial or material, helps us bring this bold, female-driven story to the screen.
Thank you for your audience and we look forward to receiving your kind donations.
