Gotham Scholars Inc. serves highly motivated public high school students that most often come from low income households and identify as a person of color. Over 90% of our students are first generation, low income, and/or person of color, looking to change their destiny and that of their community through education.
One of our scholars, Hannah, immigrated to the US last year from Japan and lives in New York City. She is a kid that left home during the middle of high school and has had to adjust to New York city life and her new high school, Gotham Professional Arts Academy, located in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. She lives with her dad, a respected public school teacher in NYC, that wants to support her dreams in any way he can.
Through her time at Gotham Scholars, Hannah has found a safe space to practice her English, visit US colleges, and dream more for herself. Last summer, she was the only student in the program to give a speech and participate in her first ever NYC debate tournament. She was so afraid and shy, but true to her personality, she tried. She said what she liked most was how much she learned from the students around her.
This year, she applied to a program at the esteemed Georgetown University to study forensics sciences on campus for two weeks this summer. This is her dream. Hannah wants to solve crimes for a living :) And, this would be her chance to see what studying at an elite college alongside other motivated high school students.
We need your help to send Hannah on this journey of self discovery, higher learning, and exploring a new place in this country. We hope she meets friends and finds her voice in this space and gets one step closer to reaching her dream of reducing crime in our world.
Every dollar counts - but the tuition is $5500. Let's send her to open her eyes to higher education and meet incredibly talented students without incurring the financial burden.
