Support Haley's Healing Journey
Donation protected
On Tuesday, February 18th, a San Luis Valley (from Crestone/Moffat/Saguache, CO) community member Haley VanWalleghan was involved in a very serious single car accident in which her car rolled down an embankment on CO Highway 112 east of Center (near Saguache County Road 56). Haley was medevaced to UC Health Memorial Hospital Central in Colorado Springs (three hours from her home) and placed in the Intensive Care Neurotrauma Unit due to the severity of her injuries.
Haley has remained stable since arrival, but has required multiple surgeries. This has included fusion of her neck vertebrae, C1-C4 (to prevent body paralysis); a massive laceration on the top of her skull within the hairline that damaged connective tissue between the skin and the skull; surgery for a compound fracture of her left arm (stabilized with pins and plates in both bones); and a potential surgery for her right fractured hand. She also sustained a severe concussion (though no brain bleeding was found). The ultimate prognosis regarding her range of movement, vision loss, and brain damage as well as care needed for rehabilitation is still unknown.
At 19, Haley—daughter of Maureen (Mo) Eich VanWalleghan and Kevin VanWalleghan—is a bright and shining youth that has her whole future in front of her. Tenacity, kindness and humor are a few of the traits Haley exemplifies. She is one of those teenagers you meet, and know they will go on to do good things in this world if given the chance.
The funds will be used immediately for transportation and housing (hotel and possible short term rental) as the hospital, rehabilitative and support services are multiple hours from Saguache County. Anticipated expenses include assistive equipment (still being considered); and medical expenses outside of insurance that will be required to support Haley in healing from her extensive injuries.
Haley has a long road ahead of her. Any support you are able to offer will help cover expenses associated with her current and future recovery, as well as give her family the much needed support to ensure all care needs are met with as much ease as possible. Thank you for your help!
