Róisín Tapponi here, the person behind Habibi Collective . Since 2018, I have really been overwhelmed by the incredible sense of community surrounding Habibi Collective, both online and at the irl events worldwide.
I mentioned it before, but something I am really keen to do is set up a permanent streaming service. Over the course of the past few months, I have curated many online screenings in collaboration with institutions. In fact, every screening I do is in collaboration with an institution, university or organisation, since I require funding to pay screening fees to my filmmakers. There is a hell of a lot of work going on behind the scenes and the Instagram page is just the tip of the iceberg!
I am really keen to mobilise Habibi Collective and have my own streaming site, so I do not have to rely on institutional support. In light of recent events, this is something I am even more adamant about - I reject a lot of curatorial offers from large institutions because I am fully aware that they offer no support to PoC beyond showing their work and their boards are disproportionately white. My presence in many programmes (especially in the UK) is largely for representational purposes, to tick those diversity boxes that enable these institutions to procure even more money from bureaucratic funding systems.
Over time, Habibi Collective has very much turned into a full time job, alongside my own full-time work and full-time studies. I have never accepted multiple applications for interns, simply because I believe free labour is the worst crime in the art industry and that no one should just work for ‘exposure’ (and obviously I don’t get paid for running this, so do not have any money to pay someone else!)
I am reaching out (albeit, hesitantly) to the community to ask for some support, in return for the support I have given over the past few years and to those of you who have been consuming content from my page and attending free screenings.
There is a GoFundMe, please donate towards helping me to create a streaming site. By having a long-term site, I will be able to host all of my screenings here independent of institutional aid and will also be able to start a comprehensive archive where films can be homed.
If you have enjoyed Habibi Collective in any capacity over the two years, I would really appreciate it if you could give something back and help this project to be sustainable. Because right now, it is not. This project is my baby, my love and life, and I want it to remain a community-led space on the margins, made to be consumed by the same people that it represents.
