Please Pray for Our Great Dane, Gus ❤️
Our sweet 2-year-old, Great Dane, Gus, was hit by a car Tuesday afternoon. Thankfully, the driver stopped and helped Damion get Gus into the truck, and it truly was no fault of the driver. We rushed him to Bloomsburg Veterinary Hospital where the doctors and staff immediately jumped into action. At one point we weren’t sure if he was going to make it, but their incredible, caring team stabilized him so he could be transferred to an emergency hospital in Allentown for more advanced care and surgery.
Gus suffered a pneumothorax (air in his chest cavity), a dislocated hip, facture of his femoral head, displaced vertebrae in his back, a broken tip of his tail, and road rash. He had a chest tube placed to help with the air leaking into his chest, and the doctors needed to wait until his lungs were strong enough before doing more tests and planning surgery.
The good news is Gus is fighting. He’s eating, standing, and even walking a little (as much as he can with a dislocated hip). Doctors say the difference from day to day has been incredible. There are no spinal injuries requiring surgery, which was a huge relief. His chest tubes have now been removed, and he continues to improve.
Sunday morning, Gus was transferred to Penn Vet so they can move forward with the hip surgery he needs. We are hopeful this will help speed up the process so we can bring our big boy home sooner. On Monday (3/16), he will be undergoing anesthesia for a CT scan to determine whether he will need a total hip replacement, Tight-Rope/Toggle, or an FHO surgery for his hip and to determine what internal damage he has suffered all together.
This has been an emotional and overwhelming week, but we are so thankful for the incredible care from the veterinary teams, our amazing neighbors who helped immediately, and for Lindsey, whose love and advocacy for animals made such a difference in getting Gus the help he needed. We are unbelievably proud of her.
We still have a long road ahead with surgery and recovery. So far, we had a $7,600 at Eastern Penn Vet Hospital and we have an estimated amount of $12,000-$15,000 at PennVet. If you are able to help support Gus’s medical care, it would mean the world to our family. If you can’t donate, please consider sharing and keeping Gus in your prayers.
Thank you all for the love, support, and prayers. Our Gus Bus adventures just wouldn’t be the same without Gus. Euthanasia was not an option for us with Gus’ age and knowing he could be saved from his injuries. We miss our Gussy and can’t wait to have him home again. ❤️
