Gus is Second Step Equine's most recent save from the Dawson Creek auction in May. We are raising funds to support his rehabilitation as well as to save at least two more horses from the June Westlock auction.
Any support for him and the others we are committed to saving is much appreciated.
Here is a little bit more about Gus' story:
Days and many hours of logistical gymnastics after the Dawson Creek auction, we managed to get this gorgeous gelding landed safely at a quarantine 30 mins away from our facility where he will head next week.
Gus is a 1900lb unknown draft cross who despite being very skinny, is estimated to be over 18HH (aka he’s a BIG boy). I reached out to the consignor who had “forgotten” that he sent this particular horse to auction until I sent him a picture of the invoice with his weight and lot number. When he landed at quarantine it took him days to start eating and drinking at a normal rate because he was so starved and dehydrated. Despite the impulsive pull to save this particular horse out of the over 300 that went for meat that day, we ended up lucking out with a kind, gentle soul who has thrived in the first few weeks of his second chance at life.
Our biggest challenge will be his hooves which are in really bad shape – likely having been neglected for years. If he is able to be handled easily, we plan to get his rehab started next weekend when we arrive and they will require at least the summer with restorative shoeing and resin to get them back to a place where they are healthy. If he isn't easily handled? Well then we have an even longer journey ahead of us but that is what we are here for!
Thank you again for considering to donate to Gus' recovery and that of our future saves who are out there waiting for us!
